President’s Message

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the newly elected president for the Texas Perinatal Association (TPA). I am a social worker by training and have worked for 16 years in the perinatal areas of Seton Medical Center in Austin. In my current position, I am the Network Perinatal Outreach Coordinator for Seton Family of Hospitals.

Since November of 2002 I have served on the TPA board, and that has been a wonderful experience.  I am blessed to work with a group of professionals whose dedication to mothers, fathers, and their babies is inspiring and energizing. TPA members volunteer numerous hours to support our mission, the promotion of the continued improvement in the quality of health care for mothers and infants in Texas. We all have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of families both now and for years to come.

Are you new to TPA? This association is a multidisciplinary organization of both medical and non-clinical professionals from regions throughout the state of Texas who share a common commitment to the families and infants of Texas. Our board comprises representatives who have are the voices for these regions. Their unique skills and training collectively contribute toward our achievement of TPA’s goals and vision for the future.

What are the goals for TPA? We support education for providers and consumers of perinatal health care through co-sponsoring regional conferences in Texas. We advocate for improvements in availability, accessibility, and continuity of preventative and primary health care services. We work to prompt initiatives toward improving the health care of mothers and infants through the education of the legislators and the public regarding the unique needs and challenges faced by these families. Your continued involvement in this association is essential to the successful achievement of these goals.

There are a variety of ways to become familiar with the issues. The TPA Website (www.txpa.org) includes links to the Texas legislature. When the legislature is in session, the schedule for upcoming house committee meetings will be listed on the site. We have a year before the legislature will be in session again, but now is the time to become educated about the issues. Our Website will assist you with this process. On the site, you will find links to resources, which include databases, online libraries, and  information regarding people and print resources.

I welcome your comments and suggestions for the organization, but also related to your own experiences in your region - successes and failures alike. Texas is a large state, the challenges and issues facing this population vary region to region. We can learn from one another. Contact me by my email, (
NSheppard58@yahoo.com) any time. I am looking forward to the year ahead.

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Nancy Sheppard, LCSW"
